I grew up BMXing and was always scared to buy a cheap bike because I have cracked several frames. Most of them aluminum. I personally finally can afford a new bike and just got a titanium hardtail. I tried to get forks four times. 2x Amazon sent me the wrong ones, and then I got scammed on Pinkbike. I am still waiting on two refunds. Then I accidentally bought a QR 9mm fork instead of a boost one... I just sent that back today. Forks is the only thing I am waiting for to get riding my first MTB. I have desert trails three blocks from my house.

I think there are several factors that are playing into the current lack of sales and the reality is that the sales would decline whether COVID happened or not. It just seems more drastic because of the false market COVID created. 1. Prices are still outrageous and the disposable income just isn’t there anymore. 2. Technologies on frame geometry isn’t making macro advances. The geo and material is about as good as it will ever be. There is a finite amount of improvement and now investments into design changes have diminishing returns so people are keeping what they have and upgrading parts. 3. Because the disposable income is gone, people are working more than before just to make ends meet so they don’t have time to ride bikes like they want.

Great video dude! Your absolutely right about everything! I've been riding now for 20+ years and worked at several shops in nyc in the past. If it wasn't for a dear friend who was the rep for Giant, I would've gave mtb a long time ago. Even with employee pricing, The shits expensive! Somewhere in the timeline, the sport went from affordable to ridiculous! The frustrating part is finding parts for my older bikes. I still dabble with dh every season and still use my 2005 Santa Cruz Bullit. Fumy you talked about distance and dedication to gettin out. I have singletrack trails by me only 15min. from my crib and haven't even been on them for some time. The industry has changed so much in 20 years and not for the better. Lift tickets at Mountain Creek $75, season pass goes for $599.99 + fees. You need a 6 figure job to keep up! The industry needs to go back to the norm otherwise it will continue to take a dive.

I just got into the game, I have been seeing crazy prices. The bike industry has collapsed because Cheye-na exposed all these made in Cheye-Na parts coming from the same place... I picked up GT from Dicks and swapped almost everything to name brand quality parts because I got to choose exacally what I wanted and still came in way lower than what most top brands sell " budget bikes " lower grade brakes cranksets etc... I picked up a gravel bike from walmart and guess what I am swapping parts out soon. I love that bike thanks for the heads up on that bike!!!

Get a lightweight playful 29er hardtail MTB, 1X, dropper post, have a second wheel set of faster, slight narrower for gravel path and.... keep the flat bar but add a pair of vintage Scott drop bar ends 'mounted' inboard the brake and shifter levers. All one needs.

I think a lot of people got into mountain biking during covid that wouldn't have done it otherwise. It allowed you to get outside with friends and get away from the high stress levels of normal life during that time. Mountain biking is higher risk, and requires more driving to get there, so people might not want do it quite as often. Bikes aren't selling now because literally everyone bought on at some point in the last 4 years, and good bikes last a long time.

I lost interest in mountain biking even before I got into mountain biking. I'd been wanting to get into mountain biking for a long time, but the more I researched the sport, got to know all about it, and realized what's involved in modern mountain biking, the less enthusiastic I got. Eventually, I realized that though I'd like to be _riding_ a mountain bike, what I didn't want was to _be_ a mountain biker: I didn't want to join a club; I didn't want to become part of a mountain biking posse; I didn't want to take a multi-hour road trip; and I certainly don't want to rebuild an MTB suspension fork. I realized that I'm happier just riding some light trails around my semi-rural house on a regular, rigid bike. That, as they say, was the end of that.

I have had the same carbon full suspension for 8 years and is my fourth mtb over 12 years. I honestly think the biggest factor is accessibility. I have no issue ride my bike to the trailhead but it’s maybe a 2-7 mile ride there. I takes a lot of practice and consistency to keep up the fitness needed that’s honestly the biggest factor. If you can’t do 20 miles on your full suspension it’s probably you and not the bike. It’s a huge time and physical investment. That being said my next purchase is a gravel bike 😂

I see the MTB for the hobbyist, and Gravel (could also include Road) for the average person. There's more average people than there are hobbyist so that would explain why sales are down. I just feel bad for bike shops that have their floors filled with unsold MTBs.

MTB from around '90. Currently have 3 older 26" bikes and want to sell them and maybe get a newer style mullet trail bike. The industry and scene got weird and more exclusive/snobby as I got older. Maybe it's me... My riding group started building a local bike park in '14 where the owners were not very appreciative in my opinion for our hard work and acted like we were a liability. This was prior to me retiring @ 55 and I just didn't have the patience for it all. Especially with my work responsibilities. I got back into dirt bikes and found a more accepting and laid back community. It's still great exercise, but not as much endurance, but I do ride longer days. If that makes sense.

I quit mountain biking back in the early 2000's, never again will I stop mountain biking now. Yes the price is high, but once you have the bike it's more of do you really feel like driving long ways to trail..for me that's a good trade off...I love road trips. I think the COVID bikers will disappear.

Another great video Matty. I also bike various styles of bikes and are happy on any but what sets mtb' biking apart from the other disciplines is adrenaline. I chase that feeling am addicted and there is something about the danger in mtb'ing that elevates this addiction.....while other biking styles ( in my opinion) doesn't come close too.

I agree, price is a big factor. Mountain biking is also very hard if there are hills. If there are no hills, a gravel bike works fine. As a mountain biker for 40 years, I would add that a 4th major innovation was disc brakes.

I love mountain biking but I found it easier to access local dirt paths all along here in Centennial. Highline, south platte, Waterton canyon and few others. It easier to grab your bike and leave the house for a quick ride. Especially if you have a busy schedule. It then became a habit of being on a gravel bike and accessing mtb trails became a challenge. I turned to a gravel back years ago as I didn’t see myself riding all road or all mtb specific riding. I then tried out gravel events / races and became hooked. I felt like I wasn’t ready or equipped to be accepted into road races. Gravel was happy medium of both worlds and everyone I talked too seemed to just take up gravel bikes so I didn’t feel out of place. Mm. Not to mention I wanted to avoid cars where I could. You can’t escape it so learning to carefully ride roads and learning awareness helps. Waterton Canyon is my favorite and parts around Chatfield and bear creek. I still love and ride mtb trails but not as frequent as my local rides on gravel bike.

I also feel like I am getting much less for the money than we used to get with bikes. I ordered a Trek Top Fuel that was supposed to be all XT except for the cassette and chain. I received a bike with all SLX components. I wasn’t happy about that.

My life use to revolve around mountain biking. I chose the places I lived based on the trails in the area. I've lived and worked at a few resorts as well. And then about 6 years ago I slowly lost interest. I have no idea why, it was almost like I burnt myself out obsessing over it. I sold my DH bike a few years ago and now my trail bike pulls my toddlers trailer. I'm hoping one day to get back into it when I have more free time.

I’ve seen a couple of your videos before, and this one got recommended to me. I totally recognized the bike shop; have been there a bunch of times! I was there a couple of months ago to get my circa 2006 Trek Hybrid bike all tuned-up. Didn’t see you there and honestly not sure I would have connected the dots, either. 🙂 I think mountain bikes used to be the default/newbie purchase for people here in Colorado. However from what I see on the bike paths around me, I think a lot of super casual riders are picking up e-bikes instead. I also haven’t really been into my mountain bike lately. Just like you mentioned, it’s a time and effort thing. Honestly I could see myself selling it next year to get an e-MTB instead. I’m a pretty casual rider and having some assistance with climbing would make it way more fun. Keep up the great videos! Finally going to subscribe. 🙂

Riding mountain bikes is a commitment, but it can easily be done without killing a lot of time. Have to be willing to ride solo and get up early. I only ride on non-working days, so 3 days a week. I get up at 4:30am, ride at sun up, I’m home between 8-9am and still have the whole day to get other stuff done. Beat the traffic, beat the heat. The drive to the trail is done before the sun is up so there isn’t much daylight time wasted.

Yeah, mountain bikes are costly to buy, maintain and repair...more likely to get injured, there is also a mindset of if you aren't doing big drops and jumps it isn't mountain biking and at the end of the day, if you don't spend a good amount of $$ you're pushing around a heavy tank where as you can spend less on a gravel bike, go like you said "on adventures", less likely to get hurt, aren't expected to do anything overly narly and the bike is easier to push through some major miles.... at the end of the day it's all fun but I also would choose a nice gravel if I could only take have one bike.

I think there are lots of reasons for the damaged MTB industry. The prices of new bikes are still crazy for most people and the used market is horrible, so if they bought in the last few years, chances are they overpaid and will not make much back by selling their used bike to pick up something new. Tons of my friends have lost their jobs in the last year or are with companies that have done massive layoffs and are afraid of being next, so tons of people I know are not spending $$ on items like bikes and are instead saving for the inevitable layoff. The trail systems are still overflowing on the weekends, so there are tons of people biking still. But also, the pandemic peak was not a normal cycle, it inevitably had to return to more normal levels.
